Playa de Oro Beach Cleanup a Path to Sustainable Certification

Puerto Vallarta is making significant strides in its commitment to environmental stewardship, with Playa de Oro on the cusp of becoming the first beach certified under the current municipal administration. This achievement, spearheaded by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía, underscores a dedication to both natural resource conservation and the promotion of responsible tourism.

As part of the final preparations, a community clean-up day will take place on March 8 at 7:30 am. Volunteers are welcome to join participating hoteliers, beach vendors, and public officials, who will come together to help ensure Playa de Oro meets certification standards. This effort is part of an ongoing commitment to preserving the city’s coastal environment.

Councilman Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal, who leads the Commission for Free, Clean, and Certified Beaches, emphasized that since the beginning of the administration, numerous clean-up campaigns have been conducted across beaches, rivers, and streams. These initiatives have significantly reduced waste reaching the ocean, with 12 clean-up events so far collecting over 100 tons of garbage with the help of approximately 1,600 volunteers.

While community participation has been strong, officials continue to encourage greater environmental awareness. A truly clean city, they remind residents, is not one that simply collects the most trash, but one where waste generation is minimized from the start.

Playa de Oro, located in the North Hotel Zone near the Puerto Vallarta Maritime Terminal, has long been a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The beach, named after one of the area’s first hotels, offers ample space for sunbathing, beach sports, and even views of cruise ships arriving at the nearby dock.

Jonathan Nacar Muñoz, ecology supervisor, confirmed that the certification process is in its final stage. Next week, an audit by the Mexican Institute of Standardization and Certification will assess Playa de Oro’s compliance with key environmental criteria, including water quality, waste management, and infrastructure improvements.

With Playa de Oro on the brink of certification, Puerto Vallarta reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, ensuring its beaches remain pristine for generations to come.
