Puerto Vallarta Airport Poised for Record-Breaking Year

Puerto Vallarta International Airport is on track to close 2024 as its busiest year yet, fueled by a surge in international travelers and an impressive passenger growth rate. From January to October, the airport welcomed 5.52 million passengers, surpassing last year’s pace with two of the busiest months still ahead.

This achievement reflects a significant shift in passenger demographics, with 58% of travelers arriving from international destinations and 42% from within Mexico. These figures suggest the airport is set to surpass the 6.7 million total passengers recorded in 2023, with projections estimating at least 6.9 million passengers by year-end.

October 2024 also saw a notable improvement in seat occupancy, reaching 86.5%, up from 82% during the same period in 2023. Coupled with an anticipated increase in flights, Puerto Vallarta’s terminal is preparing for a bustling winter season. This year, 57 routes are operating, including 14 domestic routes, 27 from the U.S., 15 from Canada, and one from Europe – a rise from last winter’s 54 routes.

Looking ahead, the airport is poised for further growth in 2025 with new seasonal routes connecting to Kansas City, Sacramento, St. Louis, and New York through Alaska Airlines, as well as a Sacramento route with Southwest Airlines. Meanwhile, recently introduced connections to Prague and Victoria are already enhancing accessibility.

To support this expansion, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico has invested nearly 2 billion pesos in upgrades throughout 2024. Improvements include expanded runways, modernized boarding equipment, enhanced baggage handling, and autonomous immigration filters. A new terminal, set for completion in 2026, will double the current space and feature sustainable design certified by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold standard.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport’s upward trajectory not only underscores its importance as a gateway to Mexico’s Pacific Coast but also signals a bright future for tourism and regional connectivity.
