Puerto Vallarta took a major step toward modernizing public transportation with the launch of Jalisco’s first electric bus transit system on August 1. The new network introduced cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable public transportation along the city’s busiest corridor, connecting key destinations from Ixtapa to downtown Puerto Vallarta.
The system, operated by the Urban Electric Train System (SITEUR) in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP) and the Ministry of Transportation (SETRAN), began service with 19 fully electric buses, including seven articulated buses that carry up to 120 passengers and 12 standard buses with capacity for up to 85 riders. An additional 10 buses operated by concessionaires also joined the network to expand service.
Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro said the project fulfilled a commitment to Puerto Vallarta by providing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system that benefits residents, workers, students, and visitors alike.
The routes now serve Francisco Medina Ascencio Boulevard, linking Ixtapa, Las Juntas, Marina Vallarta, Galerías Vallarta, the Hotel Zone, the University Center of the Coast (CUCosta), and downtown. Buses operate approximately every five to 15 minutes, with fares set at 11 pesos using the Mi Movilidad or Única transit cards.
A free feeder route was also introduced for CUCosta students, offering convenient transfers between the university and the main electric bus corridor.
Each bus features air conditioning, onboard security cameras, LED lighting, low-floor access, and designated spaces for wheelchair users, creating a more comfortable and accessible experience.
The state invested approximately 360 million pesos in the project’s infrastructure, including a charging facility capable of servicing the entire fleet, new administrative buildings, and upgraded bus stops. Improvements included new shelters, lighting, signage, and sidewalk enhancements designed to make public transportation safer and easier to use.
SITEUR General Director Amílcar López Zepeda noted that the launch marked the agency’s first operation outside the Guadalajara metropolitan area, making Puerto Vallarta the first city in Jalisco to receive this new generation of electric public transportation.
In addition to improving daily commutes, the electric buses are expected to reduce emissions and traffic noise, supporting the state’s continued commitment to cleaner, more sustainable mobility.
