Puerto Vallarta Establishes New Regional Security Council

Puerto Vallarta has taken another step toward strengthening public safety with the formal establishment of the Puerto Vallarta and Region Security Advisory Council, a collaborative body designed to improve coordination, prevention, and response efforts across the municipality and surrounding communities.

The council brings together representatives from all 3 levels of government, along with leaders from the business, academic, and social sectors. Its creation reflects a shared commitment to maintaining security and addressing challenges through cooperation and strategic planning.

During the inaugural session, Mayor Luis Munguía explained that the council emerged from agreements reached between government authorities and various sectors of society following the challenges the destination faced in late February. He noted that the coordinated response helped preserve stability in Puerto Vallarta while laying the groundwork for stronger strategies to address future contingencies.

Munguía emphasized that the new organization will serve as a platform for ongoing collaboration, allowing participants to share information, evaluate risks, and implement actions aimed at protecting residents and visitors alike.

Recent data indicates these collaborative efforts are aligning with positive trends in the area. Lorena López Guízar, the executive secretary of the Jalisco State Public Security Council, reported a decrease in regional crime rates over recent months. To sustain this momentum, López Guízar announced that more than 24 million pesos will be allocated this year to upgrade equipment and strengthen law enforcement agencies throughout the region.

Part of this institutional reinforcement will soon manifest as tangible resources on local streets. Mayor Munguía confirmed that a new batch of patrol vehicles and rapid response units will officially be delivered in the near future. The new equipment is expected to enhance preventive patrols, improve surveillance capabilities, and support faster responses to incidents across the city.

While institutional upgrades and funding are vital, state officials stress that public involvement remains a cornerstone of long-term security. Roberto Alarcón Estrada, Jalisco’s General Strategic Coordinator for Security, called for a stronger culture of citizen reporting during the session.

Alarcón Estrada noted that data generated from public reports allows authorities to design more effective crime prevention strategies, and he urged residents to rely strictly on official federal and state agency channels to stay informed about relevant safety campaigns.

One of the key agreements reached during the session was the expansion of the council’s regional scope. In addition to Puerto Vallarta, the organization will now include the municipalities of Cabo Corrientes, San Sebastián del Oeste, and Bahía de Banderas, creating a broader framework for regional cooperation on security matters.

Participants also agreed to hold regular meetings to evaluate progress, monitor ongoing initiatives, and strengthen coordination among the various institutions involved.

The formation of the Puerto Vallarta and Region Security Advisory Council reflects a united effort by government authorities and community stakeholders to build safer communities, improve preparedness, and reinforce the region’s capacity to respond effectively to future challenges.
