Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – As cooler weather approaches, Puerto Vallarta’s annual respiratory illness vaccination campaign is underway, offering residents free protection against several illnesses ahead of the 2026-2027 winter season.
The Jalisco Ministry of Health (SSJ), in coordination with national health institutions, including the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), will provide free vaccines against influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal disease and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) from October 12, 2026, through March 31, 2027.
Vaccinations are available at local health centers, with priority given to groups at greater risk of serious complications, including young children, adults over 60, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and healthcare workers.
Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas, director of the Eighth Health Region, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated before respiratory infections become more common during the winter months, particularly for those most vulnerable to severe illness.
COVID-19 vaccine eligibility varies by product. Moderna’s updated formula will be administered to people six months and older with underlying health conditions, while Pfizer’s vaccine will be available to the general population aged 12 and older.
The RSV vaccine is available to pregnant women between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy to help protect their babies from the virus after birth. The pneumococcal vaccine is intended for adults aged 60 and older, as well as people with certain underlying health conditions.
Vaccination is particularly encouraged for older adults, pregnant women, healthcare personnel and people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, kidney disease, cancer and heart disease.
Residents can also receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine and seasonal flu shot during the same visit, when eligible. This allows people to get protection against both illnesses without making separate trips to a health center.
Free flu shots will be available on weekday mornings at local health centers, including the Puerto Vallarta Centro de Salud El Centro, the Centro de Salud Remance, the Regional Hospital, and facilities in nearby municipal capitals such as Mascota and Tomatlán.
Health officials are encouraging residents to visit their nearest participating facility to learn which vaccines are recommended for their age and health status. Getting vaccinated ahead of the winter flu season can help reduce the risk of severe illness and protect those most susceptible to respiratory infections.
