PV Launches ‘Sustainable Art’ Contest for World Environment Day

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In celebration of World Environment Day 2024, Puerto Vallarta’s municipal government has launched the ‘Sustainable Art’ contest. Organized by the Environment Subdirectorate, this contest aims to promote recycling by encouraging the creation of furniture, art, and decorations from recycled materials.

Maritza Arely Flores, the deputy director of the Environment, explained that the initiative is open to individuals and groups interested in designing unique pieces with recycled materials. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative designs, with winners receiving delightful surprise prizes.

“The goal is to promote effective solid waste management practices and highlight the importance of recycling and reusing materials,” Flores emphasized. “By engaging both participants and spectators, we aim to help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.”

Interested participants should email Ambienterefor@gmail.com with their project details and team member names by June 3. The contest is open to individuals or teams of up to five people. Categories include Art & Decoration and Furniture made from recycled materials, with age groups of 10-15 years, 16-17 years, and 18 years and older.

A key requirement is the inclusion of plastic bottles in the projects. Entries that primarily use new materials or plagiarize existing creations will be disqualified.

On June 5, a panel of environmental experts will judge the submissions in Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas. This event will coincide with an environmental fair featuring engaging activities designed to promote recycling, reuse, and environmental education among the community.

World Environment Day, established by the United Nations in 1972, aims to raise global awareness and encourage action for the environment. This year, the focus is on land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resistance, with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Saudi Arabia, the host country, leading the charge.
