PV’s Hungry Critic Reviews Mi General Steak House

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – After a long hiatus from the culinary scene, I decided it was time to dust off my Hungry Critic column – and I couldn’t think of a better place to bring it back than one of Centro’s newest hidden gems for serious carnivores.

Mi General Steak House, under the direction of chef-owner Osvaldo Torres, has quietly become one of my favorite discoveries in Puerto Vallarta. It delivers exactly what so many steak lovers are looking for: exceptional Angus beef at what I consider the sweet spot for quality and value.

Finding a truly satisfying rib-eye in Puerto Vallarta can be surprisingly difficult. Too often you’re faced with two extremes: the bargain version that’s paper-thin and chewy, or the luxury steakhouse experience that practically requires a second mortgage. Mi General happily lives in that delicious middle ground.

Every steak on the menu is Certified Angus Beef, and you can absolutely taste the difference. We ordered the Rib-Eye (649 pesos), cooked exactly as requested with a beautifully caramelized crust and a perfectly medium-rare center. It was rich, juicy, and everything a rib-eye should be.

The biggest surprise of the evening, however, was the Flap Steak (549 pesos). Don’t let the name fool you. This cut was unbelievably tender, intensely flavorful, and easily one of the best beef dishes I’ve had in Vallarta. In fact, I’d put it head-to-head with many beef tenderloins.

As if that wasn’t enough temptation, I spotted the Saint Eulalia Hamburger (249 pesos) making its way to another table. Built with Angus brisket, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, it looked so good that I’ve already decided what I’m ordering on my next visit.

Every steak comes with your choice of sides. I couldn’t decide between the addictive corn ribs and the classic baked potato, but the Brussels sprouts and grilled asparagus were calling my name as well. Choosing may be the hardest part of the meal.

Mi General sits in the heart of Centro, just minutes from the Romantic Zone. Housed in a charming historic building with rustic character, it offers a relaxed atmosphere where ceiling fans keep the dining room comfortable even on Puerto Vallarta’s warmest evenings.

If you’ve been searching for a steakhouse that delivers premium beef without premium-wallet pain, Mi General deserves a place near the top of your list. Some restaurants rely on hype. This one simply lets the meat do the talking.

I give Mi General… five stars!
