Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – SEAPAL Vallarta, in coordination with the Government of Jalisco, has launched the Nidos de Lluvia (Rain Nests) program in Puerto Vallarta, bringing a sustainable rainwater harvesting system to rural communities across the municipality. The project aims to provide an alternative water supply while encouraging responsible water use.
Supported by Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía, the program will initially benefit 100 families and three schools through the installation of systems that collect, filter, and store rainwater for domestic use. The effort is designed to improve water access in areas where reliable supplies can be more challenging.
Before the official rollout, SEAPAL Vallarta, led by Director Carlos Ruiz, visited participating communities and joined an online coordination meeting with representatives from several municipalities and the Jalisco State Water Commission to prepare for implementation.
The agency is now hosting a series of informational meetings to explain how the program works, outline its environmental and household benefits, and guide Vallarta residents through the application process.
Nidos de Lluvia systems capture rainwater from household rooftops and channel it through multiple filtration and treatment stages before storing it for everyday household use. By making better use of seasonal rainfall, the systems provide families with an additional water source while promoting long-term conservation and sustainable resource management.
By expanding access to rainwater harvesting technology, the Nidos de Lluvia program represents another step toward improving water security for Puerto Vallarta’s rural communities. Through cooperation between SEAPAL Vallarta, the Government of Jalisco, and local residents, the project aims to make better use of natural resources while providing families with a practical and sustainable alternative for meeting their household water needs.
