Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – After years of abandonment, the Olympic-size swimming pool at Puerto Vallarta’s Alfonso Díaz Santos Sports Complex, commonly known as “La Bobadilla,” is finally being restored.
Workers arrived this month to begin the first phase of a larger state government project aimed at transforming the sports complex north of the city into a modern training and recreation facility.
The initial investment is approximately 50 million pesos and focuses on the swimming pool and related facilities. According to Diego Franco Jiménez, general coordinator of the Chief of Staff of the Government of Jalisco, this phase is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.
“This is a project already announced by the governor, and the Secretary of Public Works announced it recently,” Franco Jiménez said. He explained that work is beginning with contracts already in place and will include both the pool rehabilitation and maintenance throughout the sports complex.
The Olympic pool will receive structural reinforcement and a modernized hydraulic system. Its stands will also be rehabilitated, while bathrooms and changing rooms will be renovated to improve safety, hygiene and functionality.
The project goes beyond the pool itself. Plans for this first stage include a new children’s aquatic play area, improved walkways and lighting, and safer access throughout the facility.
The improvements are intended to bring the pool and surrounding areas closer to the standards needed for high-level athletic training while making them more suitable for community use.
The work is also the first step in a much larger renovation of the Alfonso Díaz Santos Sports Complex. The complete project is expected to require an investment of approximately 200 million pesos and could take up to two years to complete.
Future improvements are planned to include an athletic track, sports courts and a baseball field, creating a more comprehensive sports facility for residents of Puerto Vallarta.
The Jalisco Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP Jalisco), headed by David Zamora Bueno, previously carried out site inspections and diagnostic work at the complex. Those assessments helped establish the scope of the rehabilitation now underway.
Once completed, the broader project is expected to provide Puerto Vallarta with a safer and more modern space for athletic training, recreation and physical activity, replacing a facility that had remained largely unused for years.
