Puerto Vallarta is preparing to receive international Blue Flag certification for seven additional beaches next month, marking a significant step in the destination’s ongoing commitment to environmental quality, visitor safety, and sustainable tourism.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the City Council’s Clean, Free, and Certified Beaches Commission, where Councilman Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal confirmed that the official unveiling of the newly certified beaches will take place in August.
The internationally recognized Blue Flag program honors beaches and marinas that meet some of the world’s highest environmental and operational standards. To earn the distinction, locations must satisfy 33 rigorous criteria covering water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and visitor services.
Puerto Vallarta already boasts several recognized beaches. Playa Camarones currently holds international Blue Flag certification, while Playa de Oro has earned both White Flag and Platinum Flag environmental distinctions.
Bravo Carbajal said the City Council has been working closely with the Government of Jalisco to complete the certification process for the seven new beaches. While the names of the beaches have not yet been disclosed, officials expect to make the announcement in the coming weeks.
“Good news is coming for Puerto Vallarta next month: seven Blue Flags,” the councilman said, adding that final preparations are underway before the official presentation.
The Blue Flag certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is recognized worldwide as a symbol of clean, safe, and environmentally responsible beaches. For visitors, the distinction provides confidence that certified locations meet internationally accepted standards for environmental stewardship and public amenities.
Officials say the expanded program reflects the city’s continued investment in protecting its natural coastline while enhancing the experience for both residents and visitors. The initiative also supports Puerto Vallarta’s long-term goal of strengthening its reputation as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.
According to national figures, Mexico is home to more than 100 internationally certified beaches carrying either the Blue Flag distinction or the Sustainable Clean Beach recognition. These certifications are found across more than 15 coastal municipalities in nine states, including Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, and Guerrero.
Once the seven new certifications are confirmed, Puerto Vallarta will further strengthen its standing among Mexico’s coastal destinations recognized for exceptional environmental quality, safety, and visitor services.
