The Hungry Critic Visits De Cantaro Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In the vibrant culinary landscape of PV, the constantly evolving restaurant scene never ceases to intrigue and delight. This location on Basilio Badillo in Old Town, a veritable proving ground for several talented restaurateurs, finally found its culinary soul mate in De Cantaro several years ago.

As the sweltering days of August descend upon the city, De Cantaro’s air-conditioned interior provides a much-needed oasis. Whether you choose to indulge in the comfort of their air-conditioned dining room or the refreshingly breezy pagoda terrace, you’ll be very comfortable.

Three ladies accompanied my recent visit for a “Ladies Who Lunch” card game, naturally requiring the refuge of the air-cooled environment.

Though De Cantaro has earned acclaim for its succulent grilled meats, our group selected relatively light fares for our luncheon. Three guests were drawn to the Caesar Salad ($185 pesos), and I enhanced my plate with Grilled Salmon (+ $145 pesos). The salmon was satisfyingly abundant, though it could have had a more pronounced seasoning to capture the grilled essence I have come to expect from previous visits. Nevertheless, the salad’s delicious assembly of crisp romaine, tortilla strips, bacon, parmesans cheese, avocado, and cherry tomatoes compensated for the salmon’s subtlety.

The lone salad dissenter among us opted for the Angus Beef Cantaro Burger ($320 pesos). I must admit I was envious as I munched on my greens at the sight of this sumptuous creation, presented on an artisan bun with melted cheese and accompanied by smoked mayonnaise, potato wedges touched with truffle oil, and the classic accouterments. A true feast for the senses!

Daytime guests are further enticed by the two-for-one drink special, an ideal complement to a leisurely card game. However, I would issue a word of caution regarding the Kettle One Martinis ($280 pesos). Though delightful, their price places them among the most expensive offerings in the city.

The charm of De Cantaro is not confined to its cuisine. Its outdoor setting, coupled with its unparalleled location in Old Town, creates an ambiance that rivals the fare. I heartily recommend perusing their online menu. De Cantaro’s extraordinary diversity and creativity in their offerings are not only a delight to the palate but present a visual artistry that must be experienced.

In summary, De Cantaro encapsulates culinary ingenuity and ambiance in one extraordinary package, seamlessly catering to both the casual diner and the discerning gourmet. Its family operation stands as a proud testament to Puerto Vallarta’s rich dining heritage.
