Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – There is an abundance of small family-operated restaurants scattered across town, each with its own unique charm. However, Mariscos el Guero never fails to catch my attention, as it constantly buzzes with patrons, regardless of the season. Previously, I had only indulged in their exceptional Ceviche to-go for parties, which unquestionably stands as one of the finest in all of Vallarta. Thus, when a friend suggested we dine there for lunch, I seized the opportunity to savor the full experience.
To kick off our meal, we opted to share a generous portion of their Guacamole ($108 pesos). While the presentation might not have been a work of art, the taste itself was absolutely impeccable. The ripeness of the avocados shone through, and the accompanying house-fried tortilla chips and salsa were spot-on.
As I’m currently adhering to a Keto diet, I decided to indulge in their Shrimp Cocktail ($180 pesos) for my main course. You have your choice of shrimp, scallops, octopus, or a mix. Served cold in a parfait glass, the medium-sized shrimp were firm and delectable, swimming alongside creamy avocado and crisp onion, all immersed in a tangy tomato broth. Personally, I prefer a slightly thicker consistency for the broth, but a few shots of ketchup did the trick.
I couldn’t resist ordering a Smoked Marlin Taco ($32 pesos). I love well-prepared smoked marlin, and Mariscos el Guero did not disappoint. As you can discern, seafood reigns supreme at this establishment. Those seeking beef or chicken should search elsewhere, for here, seafood is the name of the game, and shrimp is the unrivaled monarch of the menu.
My dining companion, on the other hand, opted for the Shrimp Garbardina Style ($298 pesos). This enticing dish features six plump shrimp, generously stuffed with cheese and enveloped in savory bacon, all accompanied by a velvety mustard sauce. The rice and side vegetables served alongside were rather basic and a bit overcooked.
Mariscos el Guero undeniably holds a special place in the hearts of locals, exuding a warm and inviting atmosphere. The exuberant decor adds an element of amusement, even if the presentation of the food itself may not dazzle. The attentive service staff anticipated our every need, enhancing the overall experience. This establishment is the perfect Saturday afternoon haven for a refreshing beer and indulging in a delightful seafood lunch.
