Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – When a severe water shortage left several Puerto Vallarta neighborhoods dry last week, the local nonprofit association Vallarta Cares immediately stepped in. Mobilizing a fleet of tanker trucks, the group delivered clean drinking water straight to the doorsteps of families struggling to get by without running taps.
For residents waiting on municipal services to be fully restored, the direct deliveries offered immediate relief for everyday household needs.
The organization’s emergency response efforts did not stop with the drought relief. Just days after filling up water tanks for dry homes, the team pivoted to a completely different type of water crisis. On Saturday, the organization shifted its focus to Mojoneras, where heavy rainfall on Friday caused flooding in several homes.
Jorge Misael López Muro, director of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta, confirmed that 22 homes suffered severe damage, with floodwaters reaching 80 centimeters high due to a clogged storm drain. Vallarta Cares volunteers spent the weekend pumping water out of flooded living spaces and cleaning up debris alongside affected residents.
These rapid-response efforts reflect how much Vallarta Cares has grown since its founding during the COVID-19 pandemic as a grassroots food bank. Today, the organization provides a range of services, including a soup kitchen, food pantry, emergency and disaster relief, healthcare, dental care, educational programs and access to clean drinking water.
The nonprofit organization’s founders expressed gratitude for the ongoing public support it has received and encouraged residents to share information about its programs so that more families can benefit from its services.
Vallarta Cares also invited people who are unfamiliar with its work to visit its facilities and learn more about the programs available to the community.
Its recent response to both the water shortage and flooding demonstrates how community organizations can provide practical assistance when basic services are disrupted. Through its ongoing programs and emergency response efforts, Vallarta Cares continues to strengthen its network of support for families across Puerto Vallarta.
