Holiday Crackdown: Profeco Prepares for Tourist Surge in Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas anticipate a year-end tourist influx, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) is preparing to roll out a comprehensive inspection campaign aimed at safeguarding visitors from fraudulent practices. This proactive initiative underscores Profeco’s commitment to ensuring a fair and enjoyable experience for all.

Jesús Carmona Jiménez, president of the Association of Hotels and Motels of Bahía de Banderas, acknowledged the upcoming inspections, attributing them to a recent rise in consumer complaints. Profeco’s focus will encompass hotels, timeshare operations, and affiliated marketing companies, with the objective of preventing deceptive sales tactics and price gouging.

The inspections will involve meticulous verification of advertised amenities, menu accuracy, and adherence to weights and measures regulations. Profeco inspectors will be empowered to investigate discrepancies, ensuring that advertised 450-gram steaks, for example, are served at the promised weight.

Furthermore, Profeco emphasizes its ongoing commitment to consumer protection beyond the holiday season. The agency offers readily available calibration services for equipment used by hotels, restaurants and gas stations, including scales, measuring instruments and fuel pumps. This proactive approach underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining accurate and fair business practices.

The Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas tourism sectors welcome Profeco’s proactive measures. By fostering a level playing field, these inspections enhance the destination’s appeal and contribute to a positive visitor experience. So, let the holiday revelry commence, with the assurance that Profeco stands as a safeguard against unscrupulous practices, ready to ensure a scam-free and memorable vacation.
