Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a weekly spotlight on the courageous contenders of this year’s “What A Drag” event, straight men are embracing a dazzling transformation into enchanting drag personas, epitomizing the spirit and flamboyance synonymous with drag performances. These daring individuals vie for the esteemed title of “Miss What A Drag,” aiming to showcase their grace, style, and humor in a remarkable display of solidarity.
This week, let’s acquaint ourselves with Mau Jiba, a proud resident of Vallarta sponsored by Nacho Daddy, where he graces the stage weekly. Mau’s Fairy Drag Mother, E Andrew Sands, a regular star in The Rocky Horror Show at Act2PV.
Overseeing Mau’s hair, wardrobe, and makeup, is the talented Gouda Gabor, known for acts like “Say Cheese” on Mondays and “Come Blow Your Horn” during Open Mic on Tuesdays at Nacho Daddy. Each participant collaborates with a skilled team to craft their fabulous drag personas.
When asked about his motivation for participating, Mau shared, “I was invited by Tammy of Nacho Daddy, and I thought it would be fun to do. But then I got to know that everything raised is for this great cause, and it made me feel proud to be part of something that is really helping my community.”
Explaining his choice of Vallarta over Puebla, Mau revealed, “Vallarta, compared to Puebla, is a place where musicians like me can actually make a living out of what we love. Tourists here appreciate the talent, giving us the opportunity to showcase our skills and make a living. Now that I live here, I love the community and the harmonious coexistence of different cultures.”
Delving into the origin of his name, Mau expressed the importance of reflecting the amalgamation of English and Spanish, symbolizing the coexistence of the two predominant cultures in the region. ‘Miss Maloya’, as Mau is known, is a multicultural character embodying unity.
Beyond being a celebration of diversity, “What A Drag” serves as a crucial fundraising platform for the Casa Esperanza Women’s Shelter. All proceeds from this spectacular event support this noble cause, providing assistance and refuge to women and children affected by domestic violence.
