New Civil Protection Council Prepares for Peak Hurricane Season

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the peak of hurricane season approaches, Puerto Vallarta has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Last week, Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González inaugurated a new Municipal Civil Protection Council, a collaborative effort between government agencies, civil society, and business sectors to mitigate the potential impacts of tropical cyclones.

The newly formed council, led by Misael López Muro, the city’s new director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, will serve as a central hub for coordinating disaster response efforts. The council’s membership includes representatives from all levels of government, local businesses, and community organizations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to risk management.

Meteorologist Víctor Manuel Cornejo López, an advisor to the council, highlighted the ongoing threat posed by the remaining predicted hurricanes. He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for potential storms that could impact the region.

Mayor Munguía González reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety of the community. He assured residents that municipal offices and the city council would be available to provide support and assistance during any emergency.

The director of Civil Protection reported that ongoing monitoring is being conducted in areas susceptible to flooding, particularly near riverbanks and in suburban neighborhoods. In preparation for potential evacuations, the city has identified 16 temporary shelters capable of accommodating over 3,500 people, or approximately 885 families.

By establishing this new council and implementing proactive measures, Puerto Vallarta is demonstrating its dedication to safeguarding its residents and ensuring a resilient response to natural disasters.
