Puerto Vallarta’s Women’s Park: Legacy, Equality, and Remembrance

Update: In an act of solidarity, Puerto Vallarta will illuminate its iconic Malecón Arches, the Municipal Presidency building, the La Lija Cultural Center amphitheater, and the UMA in a radiant purple hue on March 7th, 8th, and 9th. This symbolic gesture shines a light on the ongoing pursuit of justice for women and underscores the unwavering dedication of government institutions to this vital cause.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a powerful move towards honoring the legacy of women and fostering gender equality the Puerto Vallarta City Council has unanimously endorsed a Building Agreement Initiative officially designating a green area known for being a memorial site for victims of femicide as “El Parque de las Mujeres,” or “The Women’s Park.”

This significant action, spearheaded by Councilwoman Melissa Marlene Madero Plascencia, transforms a space already recognized as a memorial for femicide victims into a formal symbol of resilience and societal commitment.

The park’s designation addresses a crucial disparity: the underrepresentation of women in public space naming. While men’s contributions are acknowledged in approximately 10% of public areas, women’s are recognized in less than 1%. This initiative seeks to rectify this imbalance, particularly poignant given the daily reality of 11 femicides across the nation. By establishing “The Women’s Park,” the city amplifies the visibility of women’s memory and reinforces the urgency of combating gender-based violence.

Councilwoman Madero’s proposal, grounded in constitutional and municipal legal frameworks, ensures the park’s enduring significance. The approved measures include the installation of clear, respectful signage, consistent maintenance of the green space, and broad dissemination of the agreement through official channels.

“Each tribute to a victim in the ‘Parque de las Mujeres’ is a call to reflection and action to build a future without violence against womenCouncilwoman Madero said. “The memory of the women who have lost their lives forces us to fight against indifference and to firmly demand justice. Honoring the victims not only preserves their legacy, but also reaffirms our commitment to ending gender violence.

The councilwoman extended a heartfelt invitation to the entire community to participate in this unified endeavor, emphasizing that only through collective action can a tangible transformation occur, securing a future defined by respect and equality for all women.

This initiative transcends mere historical preservation; it stands as a resolute declaration of zero tolerance towards gender violence, striving to cultivate a more just and equitable urban landscape for every resident.
