Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In commemoration of World Animal Day 2019, from October 4–11, the city of Puerto Vallarta will celebrate ‘Animal Week,’ a week-long event featuring a series of talks and activities that promote the care and protection of the many different species that inhabit the Banderas Bay region.
The head of the city’s Animal Welfare Department, Silvia Álvarez Bustos, said that the week will begin on Friday, Oct. 4 at 10:00 am with an art exhibition in the courtyard of the Municipal Presidency, where five artists will present their animal-related art works in clay, paint, and ceramics related. At 6:00 pm, the 2018 film, Cría Puercos, will be screened at the Vallartense Institute of Culture (IVC) auditorium on the Rio Cuale Island.
On Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 pm, José Luis Jiménez Castro, who has promoting animal rights and welfare for 25 years, and Laura Díaz, the founder and producer of the Amigo Animal program, will present “Social Journalism in Animal Welfare” in the meeting room at the Unidad Administrativa Municipal (UMA), Mezquital 613, Col. On Sunday, an evening of music and poetry, featuring an “Animal Bohemian” concert will be held in the courtyard of the Municipal Presidency at 7:30 pm; and on Monday, Oct. 7 starting at 10:00 am, a photographic exhibition featuring the animals available for adoption at the Puerto Vallarta Animal Shelter will be displayed on the Malecón.
Imperial Bee, a group that collaborates with the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Firefighters Department, will present “Bees, our allies,” which addresses the need to protect beehives, will be held in the IVC auditorium on Monday, October 8 at 12 noon, followed by a walk along the Rio Cuale Island to discover the local bee population’s habitations.
That same evening at 6:00 pm, a talk about Humpback Whales and the Banderas Bay area’s various protection projects will be held at 6:00 pm in the Bernice Starr room at the Los Mangos Library, which will also host a discussion on the Basic Concepts of Animal Welfare at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 9.
On Friday, a symposium on the Management of Animal Poisonings, will be held at the UMA at 11:00 am; that night Señor Frogs will host the fifth edition of Puerto Vallarta’s annual Animal Party.
With the exception of the Animal Party, which costs $150 pesos per person, all Animal Week events are free, However, voluntary in-kind donations of sterile gauze and gloves, polyglocolic acid sutures, kitty litter, and canned and/or dry cat and dog food are encouraged for the residents of the Puerto Vallarta Animal Shelter, better known as CCAAAM, or El Centro de Control, Asistencia Animal y Albergue Municipal.
