Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Many good parties are the result of a wedding and Oktoberfest is no exception. The tradition of celebrating Oktoberfest began with the festivities surrounding the Royal Wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810.
The centerpiece of the day was a horse race, and, by all accounts, the 40,000 people who showed up also downed numerous beers. The revelers committed to do it again the next year, and a tradition was born. It soon became the world’s biggest beer festival, attracting more than six million people to Munich, Bavaria, Germany year after year.
Today, cities all over the world keep the spirit of Oktoberfest alive with festivals that feature music and dancing, along with authentic German food – and lots of beer.
Austria’s answer to the Oktoberfest in Munich is the Wiener Wiesn’, an annual cultural and folk music festival held in Vienna that gives each region of Austria a chance to show off its local traditions, arts, food and beer.
Salzburg is generally regarded as the beer capital of Austria. Eleven breweries in and around the city reflect the impressive variety of flavors available to beer aficionados. From “top dog” Stiegl and venerable Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln, to the Weissbierbrauerei and microbreweries at inns that produce only for their own guests, Salzburg is the perfect place to experience the multifaceted world of “amber nectar.”
Unless you happen to be in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this month, where Kaiser Maximilian Restaurant is serving up a selection of Stiegl beers that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of Salzburg.
With a history spanning over more than 500 years, Stiegl plays a significant part in Austria’s beer culture given, among other things, the huge variety of beer it offers. And Kaiser Maximilian is featuring three of them as part of their Oktoberfest celebration.
Stiegl-Goldbräu – “Salzburg’s liquid gold”
Stiegl-Goldbräu is a traditional Salzburg beer specialty with 12° Plato and a characteristic golden-yellow color. A full-bodied beer with a gentle bitterness brewed using indigenous ingredients, Stiegl-Goldbräu is wonderfully refreshing and very agreeable.
Stiegl-Columbus 1492 Pale Ale – “The beer for discoverers”
A refreshing discovery for beer experts. This top-fermented specialty beer charms with its pale color and delicate cloudiness. The elegant body and fruity-hoppy flavor ensure you anticipate every subsequent sip. Stiegl-Columbus 1492 combines freshness and hoppy-fruity intensity.
Stiegl-Paracelsus Bio-Zwickl – “The naturally cloudy organic beer”
Only domestic ingredients from controlled biological cultivation are used in this amber-colored, natural and traditional beer specialty from Salzburg. When brewing this beer we add Laufener Landweizen to the blend – a fine ancient grain we grow on healthy land and malt ourselves at the Stiegl-Farm Wildshut. This completes the velvelty mild taste – an absolute delight.
In addition, Kaiser Maximilian’s chefs are creating a special Oktoberfest menu featuring authentic German food that they’ll be serving up, along with the restaurant’s traditional Austrian fare, from October 9th through November 10th. Stay tuned for more details.
