2022 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season Starts on May 15

Indicators are pointing to a higher-than-average hurricane season for 2022. Seasons with above-average activity typically have 13-16 named storms and 6-8 hurricanes, but this year’s storm period, which begins on May 15 in the Eastern Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic, will be above average, with at least 19 named storms and 9 hurricanes predicted.

COVID Vaccine for Children Approved, Mask Mandates Debated

On Tuesday, Mexico's Deputy Health Minister announced that as of April 28, Children aged 12 and over can be registered for a COVID-19 vaccine. He also said that the use of face masks is no longer essential, but added that they can still be useful in enclosed spaces. Here in Jalisco, mask mandates remain in place.

AMLO Approves Financing for New Baseball Stadium in Nayarit

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has approved financing for a new baseball stadium in Tepic, capital of Nayarit state, where he recently revealed a series of infrastructure plans to boost tourism. The complex will have capacity for 8,000 spectators, Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro said on Twitter on Monday.

Giant Insect Sculpture Exhibition at Chapultepec Botanical Gardens

Visitors to Mexico City's world-famous city park can now enjoy an art installation made up of eight giant insect sculptures. Erected in the Chapultepec botanical garden for the Chapultepec Forest Insect Festival, which took place between April 14 and 17, the 2.5-meter-high bronze sculptures will remain on permanent display.

GAP: March Passenger Traffic Up 11.7% at 12 Mexican Airports

For March 2022, the total number of terminal passengers at GAP's 12 Mexican airports increased by 11.7%, compared to the same period of 2019. Tijuana, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara airports presented an increase in passenger traffic of 37.1%, 17.7%, 6.6% and 0.9%, respectively.

Mexicans ‘Fall in Love’ with Water and Flavored Drinks

Between 2012 and 2022, per capita consumption of both natural and flavored bottled water in Mexico grew 50 percent, from 207 to 310 liters per year, according to data from Euromonitor and Statista. In that same period, the per capita consumption of soft drinks fell 8.6 percent, going from 112.4 to 102.7 liters.

Mexico’s 50 Peso Bill Wins 2021 Bank Note of the Year Award

Mexico's 50-peso bill has been named banknote of the year for 2021 by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS). As printer and issuer of the note, the Bank of Mexico beat 19 other nominees to the award, narrowly edging out Sao Tome and Principe’s 200 Dobra bill to claim the prestigious title for the second year in a row.
