Es por Vallarta Program Ends

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – With the sixth installment of the ‘Es por Vallarta’ food distribution program completed, the Municipal Government has terminated the initiative, which Mayor Arturo Dávalos Peña implemented on April 8 in an effort to provide support to the thousands of Puerto Vallarta families that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over six fortnights, more than 60,000 despensas were distributed through a well-defined strategy led by the Social Development directorate, in coordination with the different dependencies and with the participation and support of the DIF System, Seapal and municipal officials, who volunteered time and effort to help others.

The program was initially designed to support 7,500 families every fortnight by providing ‘care packages,’ filled with staples like rice, beans, canned goods and basic necessities; however, from the first installment, the goal was extended to 10,000 homes, thanks to the support of many citizens, volunteers and businessmen who joined this noble cause.

Mayor Arturo Dávalos highlighted the support of council members and directors who, together with him, contributed part of their salary to support this program, as well as members of the private and industrial sectors who donated tons of product to benefit local families, while Seapal Vallarta did the same with the free filling of thousands of jugs with certified quality drinking water.

“It has been a great challenge for everyone who participated in this noble project. This is another example of how, in Puerto Vallarta, difficult moments unite us and fill us with the energy we need to keep moving ahead,” said the mayor.

He also extended his recognition to City Council collaborators who contributed their ‘grain of sand’ to answer calls at the call [registration] center; the sector coordinators, Citizen Participation staff, volunteers and everyday citizens who joined the effort each week to prepare the despensas and transport them to the distribution centers for delivery.

Dávalos Peña indicated that the objective of the ‘Es por Vallarta’ program was to help the greatest possible number of Puerto Vallarta families that were affected by this health contingency, and this was the result. “We made six deliveries of 10,000 pantries each, benefiting thousands of people who were left without jobs because of this pandemic, and we did it in a responsible and orderly manner, without putting the health or life of any citizen at risk,” he asserted.

The mayor took the opportunity to reiterate his call to the population to continue practicing preventive and sanitary measures. Since the emergency has not passed and new cases of coronavirus continue to be registered every day, “it is important to continue following the recommendations of the health authorities to avoid more infections,” he emphasized.
