Jalisco Combats Seasonal Job Losses with New Initiative

Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – Jalisco, Mexico’s job creation powerhouse, is facing a familiar challenge: the seasonal decline in employment during December and January. To combat this, the state government has launched a unique program to incentivize businesses to maintain and even create new jobs during this period.

Data shows that on average, Jalisco loses nearly 20,000 formal jobs each December, largely due to businesses facing payroll liquidity issues and economic uncertainty.

Enter the “Countercyclical Program for Containing Job Losses in Jalisco.” This initiative, administered by the Jalisco Impulse Fund Trust (FIMJA) in collaboration with the General Coordination of Economic Growth and Development (CGECyDE), aims to reverse this trend by providing financial support to companies that create and retain jobs through the end of the year and into January.

Companies that verify the creation of new formal jobs registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) during this period will receive monthly incentives. These incentives range from 7,500 pesos per job for positions above 2.2 minimum wages, to 12,500 pesos for jobs exceeding that threshold with a maximum total support of 200,000 pesos, which will be granted via reimbursement.

Xavier Orendain De Obeso, head of the state’s Economic Growth and Development Coordination, emphasized the importance of collaboration between businesses, unions, and the government in addressing this issue. He expressed hope that the program will provide businesses with the confidence to maintain their workforce and contribute to a thriving economy.

With over 2 million formal jobs currently registered in Jalisco, and 93,973 created so far this year alone, the state continues to be a leader in job creation in Mexico. This new initiative signifies the government’s commitment to supporting businesses and ensuring the continued economic prosperity of the region.
