Jalisco North Coast Municipalities Collaborate on Dengue Prevention

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Following a state alert for rising dengue cases, the six municipalities in Jalisco’s North Coast Health Jurisdiction No. 8, including Puerto Vallarta, have pledged to strengthen preventive measures. This commitment emerged from the IV Ordinary Meeting of the Regional Network of Municipalities for Health.

The meeting, attended by Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) head Fernando Petersen Aranguren and municipal representatives like Puerto Vallarta’s interim mayor Francisco José Martínez Gil, emphasized the crucial role of prevention. Agreed-upon actions include eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, disseminating preventive messages, and raising awareness through campaigns and departmental information drives.

The region, encompassing Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, San Sebastián del Oeste, Mascota, and Talpa de Allende, has seen the highest case rates in Jalisco this year. The epidemiological picture is further complicated by the high prevalence of serotype 3 (85% of confirmed cases), offering no immunity to individuals previously infected with other dengue strains.

Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas, Health Region director, stressed the importance of collaborative preventive actions like debris removal, tire collection, larval control, and targeted fogging in tourism and education sectors. Mayor Martínez Gil echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a coordinated regional effort to prevent a dengue outbreak.
