Puerto Vallarta’s fishing community is preparing for the 19th Annual Playa Los Muertos Fishing Tournament on November 7, with more than 104 boats expected to compete for 450,000 pesos in guaranteed cash prizes. The event will combine sport fishing, local cuisine, music, and a popular community celebration on the beach.
The annual competition brings together anglers from Puerto Vallarta and surrounding communities for a day of fishing in Banderas Bay. This year’s organizers expect participation to exceed previous editions, with competitors vying for cash prizes in four categories: dorado, marlin, tuna, and Pacific crevalle jack, known locally as toro.

The tournament will begin at 7:00 am on November 7, when participating boats depart simultaneously from in front of the Playa Los Muertos pier following the starting signal. Boats are expected to return by 5:00 pm, giving anglers the day to land their heaviest catches.
Dorado carries the largest prize, with 200,000 pesos awarded for the heaviest fish. The marlin and tuna categories will each offer 100,000 pesos, while the winner in the toro category will receive 50,000 pesos. Sponsors will contribute additional surprise prizes, adding to the competition.
Anglers can register on November 6 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at Deportes Gutierrez Rizo, located at Aquiles Serdán 350 in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone. The entry fee remains unchanged from last year at 6,500 pesos per boat.
Registration requires copies of the vessel’s registration and maritime safety certificates, along with valid sport-fishing permits for everyone aboard. Participants must also provide their planned navigation route to help organizers monitor boats throughout the competition.
While the fishing contest is the main attraction, the event is equally known for its food and community atmosphere. Beginning at 2:00 pm, 10 local chefs will prepare fish brought in for weighing over charcoal grills, sharing the day’s catch with attendees. Music and performances by local bands will add to the festivities.
The public is welcome to join the celebration, making the tournament an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy freshly grilled fish, live music, and a long-standing Puerto Vallarta tradition, even if they are not competing on the water.
Organizers hope the 19th edition will set a new participation record while preserving the friendly spirit that has helped make the tournament a fixture on the local fishing calendar.
