Mexico City – Mexico is preparing for a significant expansion of its electricity generation capacity as part of the federal government’s Mexico Plan, a long-term strategy designed to strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure and support economic growth.
During Wednesday’s morning press conference, Energy Secretary Luz Elena González announced that the country plans to add at least 32,000 megawatts (MW) of new electricity generation by 2030 through a combination of new power plants and modern energy technologies.
According to González, approximately 22,000 MW of the new capacity will come from renewable energy sources, representing nearly 70 percent of the planned expansion. The projects are expected to play a key role in Mexico’s transition toward cleaner energy while reinforcing national energy sovereignty.
“We are going to increase electricity generation and produce around 32,000 MW of additional new energy by 2030 with new sources and new generation,” González said.
The secretary noted that most of the planned generation capacity will be developed during the current administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum. The effort is intended to ensure that Mexico has the energy resources needed to support households, businesses, industry, and future economic development.
Officials say the initiative is closely tied to the government’s broader goal of achieving “energy justice,” ensuring reliable access to electricity throughout the country while meeting the growing demands of commerce and manufacturing.
The renewable energy projects will include a variety of technologies. Planned investments encompass photovoltaic solar facilities, wind farms, solar thermal systems, and geothermal energy projects. In addition, the government will invest in upgrading equipment and carrying out major maintenance work at hydroelectric plants nationwide to improve efficiency and extend their operational life.
By diversifying its energy mix and increasing renewable generation, Mexico aims to strengthen the reliability of its electrical system while reducing dependence on traditional energy sources. The expansion is expected to support both environmental goals and the country’s long-term economic competitiveness.
The renewable energy investments represent one element of the Mexico Plan, a national strategy that combines economic development, job creation, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure modernization to support Mexico’s long-term growth and prosperity.
