Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – In 2024, Puerto Vallarta solidified its reputation as a premier destination for sports tourism, hosting 34 national and international events that showcased a diverse range of disciplines. These events brought over 60,000 visitors to the city, generating an impressive economic impact of approximately 900 million pesos.
Luis Villaseñor Nolasco, director of the Public Trust for Tourism Promotion and Advertising (Fidetur), highlighted the importance of continuing to invest in sports tourism. “This sector not only complements the seasonality of tourism demand but also promotes a sports culture and inspires new local talents,” he stated.
Despite limited sports infrastructure, Puerto Vallarta’s natural beauty and excellent tourist facilities make it an ideal location for such events. Villaseñor emphasized the potential for growth, noting, “Investing in sports infrastructure could attract even more events, boost employment, and increase revenue for the city.”
The year’s events included high-profile competitions like the WTA 125 Puerto Vallarta women’s tennis tournament, the PGA Tour Mexico Open, the 45th MEXORC Regatta, and the Puerto Vallarta Mexico by UTMB trail running competition. Other favorites, such as the 12th Puerto Vallarta International Charro Championship and the 68th Puerto Vallarta International Fishing Tournament, highlighted the region’s rich traditions.
Puerto Vallarta’s natural settings, from the serene Bay of Banderas to its lush mountains, provided stunning backdrops for these events, enhancing the experience for athletes and spectators alike. With its strategic geographic location and top-tier connectivity by air, sea, and land, the city continues to attract diverse gatherings, from sports competitions to corporate events.
By combining scenic beauty with world-class hospitality, Puerto Vallarta has proven itself a standout destination for sports tourism, leaving participants and visitors with unforgettable memories and a strong desire to return.
