Puerto Vallarta Launches 2023 Day of the Dead Photo Contest

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The government of Puerto Vallarta, led by Professor Luis Alberto Michel Rodríguez, is calling all photographers, both professional and amateur, to participate in the First Puerto Vallarta Promotional Photography Contest, centered around the theme of the 2023 Day of the Dead celebrations.

At a recent press conference, Christian Salvador Preciado Cázares, the head of Tourism and Economic Development, along with professional photographer Alfonso Lepe, shared the details of this cultural initiative aimed at showcasing Puerto Vallarta as a unique tourist destination.

Open to both Mexican nationals and foreigners, the contest encourages participants to submit up to five original photographs capturing various aspects of the Day of the Dead tradition. Whether it’s enchanting catrinas or intricate offerings and altars, the contest seeks to showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of this Mexican celebration. All entries must be recent, taken before November 30 of this year, and comply with specific guidelines.

Photographers are challenged to present their work in either black and white or color, without resorting to alterations such as collage, photomontage, or digital illustration. Digital filters and manipulations that add or eliminate elements in the image are also not allowed.

In addition, if a photograph includes a portrait of a person, explicit authorization from the individual portrayed is mandatory for use and publication. Entries with denigrating, aggressive, or discriminatory content will be disqualified, as will those conveying explicit or implicit political or commercial messages. Contestants are also required to confirm that their submissions have not been part of previous contests or awarded elsewhere.

Prospective entrants must submit their works, meeting specific size and resolution criteria, in both physical and digital formats to the offices of the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development. The submission period spans from the present date until December 15, with office hours from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Participants are asked to include their personal information, address, email, telephone number, photo title, and a chosen pseudonym along with their submission. The winning photographs will not only receive recognition but will contribute to promoting the rich cultural tapestry of Puerto Vallarta on a global stage.

The announcement of the winners is scheduled for December 21, 2023, on the official Facebook page. Participants in this contest must authorize the Puerto Vallarta City Council to publish and disseminate the photographs in any electronic or printed media, with the assurance of guaranteed personal data protection.
