UPDATE: All eight of the kennels to be built at the Puerto Vallarta municipal pound have now been sponsored, but donations are still needed for dog beds and houses, a water system and more. For more information and all the latest updates, follow Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals on Facebook.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – When a dog first arrives at the municipal shelter in Puerto Vallarta, destitute and often saved from a life of abuse, illness, or injury, they face the depressing prospect of being housed in cramped quarantine conditions.
The current quarantine area can house ten dogs, eight of those kennels are insufficient and sparse, their size roughly 3x3x3 feet. They have no natural light and very little circulating air. In that tiny space, dogs large or small, eat, sleep and go to the bathroom.
Already demoralized, these highly vulnerable dogs will sadly live in the most uninviting, run-down section of the shelter for several weeks until their recovery is complete.
Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to keep the area clean, giving the dogs exercise and as much loving attention and veterinary care as possible. But ultimately, they must return to an area not conducive to healing or mental and physical well-being.
With funding and generous public philanthropy, this dark, dank, run-down area will be replaced by eight brand new kennels where the sick and needy dogs with the greatest urgency of medical attention and love, can begin their recovery.
The new quarantine area will replace those eight old and [unfit-for-use] kennels – it will be fresh and invigorating with an abundance of natural light. Dogs will be able to smell the clean air, gaze at blue skies or howl gleefully at the night-moon. Kennels will be large enough to stretch their legs, and within their accommodation, beds and crates will give extra comfort and privacy, where once they had none.
A separate exercise area will allow them to run and play until they are healthy and free from illness, injury, or contagion. This new quarantine will allow that to happen and because of that, the healing process will quicken and their chances of adoption will be vastly enhanced.
This long-overdue project will begin soon and Friends Of Puerto Vallarta Animals are seeking donations and/or sponsorship to allow this expansion to happen.
Donations can be for any amount and be made on the friendsofpvanimals.com website, or similarly, sponsorship can be towards one or more of the following:
• Sponsor a Kennel: $500 USD – $635 CA
• Dog house: $100 USD – $127 CA
• Ceiling fan: $100 USD – $127 CA
• Dog bed: $50 USD – $64 CA
• Water pail & food bowl: $25 USD – $32 CA
• Fully Furnished kennel with all of the above: $775 USD – $983 CA
These wonderful, sentient animals were domesticated by humans – let us now allow them then to heal in comfortable, serene surroundings in their greatest hour of need.
