Puerto Vallarta Prepares for Storm Season with Proactive Training

Puerto Vallarta is stepping up its preparedness for the height of hurricane season with new training to ensure temporary shelters are ready if needed. Although the city is shielded by its bay and rarely experiences direct hits, local authorities are committed to protecting the community during storm season.

Earlier this year, the Civil Protection and Fire Department began inspections of the city’s shelters, confirming that each location is equipped to receive residents in case of emergency. Building on those efforts, the Jalisco DIF System and Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection recently hosted a Temporary Shelter Management workshop for employees of the Municipal DIF System.

The training was conducted under DIF Vallarta’s APCE (Attention to People in Emergency Conditions) program, which focuses on readiness for Pacific storms, cyclones, and hurricanes. APCE coordinator Cristian Martínez Ulloa explained that participants learned protocols for documenting shelter use, enforcing internal rules, and determining the proper time to activate a facility. “This is about being fully prepared for any contingency,” Martínez Ulloa said. “The workshops are designed to give staff the knowledge and confidence to act quickly and correctly when it matters most.”

As part of the program, a citywide simulation will take place in September, aligned with the national drill on Civil Protection Day. The exercise will test the activation of a local shelter and strengthen coordination between municipal and state authorities, ensuring faster and more effective responses.

With these proactive measures, Puerto Vallarta demonstrates its firm commitment to safety and preparedness. By ensuring shelters and response teams are ready, the city gives residents and visitors confidence that the community is well protected throughout hurricane season.
