Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta recently felt the brunt of Hurricane Lidia, with one of its most significant impacts being the loss of trees. According to authorities and environmental organizations, the powerful winds from the hurricane knocked down around 960 trees.
Concerns over the ecological impact have prompted Councilor María Elena Curiel Preciado, the president of the City Council’s Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Commission, to launch a city-wide reforestation program.
Titled “Replanting Puerto Vallarta Trees,” the campaign’s primary objective is to encourage responsible citizens to adopt one of the approximately 500 trees that will be planted in the first half of November. The aim is to ensure the trees grow to maturity in a healthy environment with the support of local residents.
Councilor Curiel Preciado explained, “We plan to repopulate the areas that were most affected by planting trees along Francisco Medina Ascencio, Francisco Villa, and Libramiento avenues. We also intend to establish a seedbed in the Women’s Park and Los Pájaros in Aralias to germinate and transplant fruit seeds.”
The recommended tree species for planting in the municipality include amapa, primavera, cuastecomate, papelillo, caoba, arrayan, ceiba and rosa amarilla.
The reforestation initiative extends to various neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta, such as the Center of Old Town, the Romantic Zone, 5 de Diciembre, Versalles, Aralias, Los Sauces, and the Luis Donaldo Colosio highway bypass.
Councilor Curiel Preciado emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “We are reaching out to primary, secondary, and high school students, as well as parents and their boards of directors. This is a collective effort.”
Those interested in participating in this endeavor to replenish Puerto Vallarta with trees can contact Councilor Curiel Preciado at 322-149-2314 or visit her office on the upper floor of the municipal presidency. Together, the community can restore the natural beauty of Puerto Vallarta and mend the damage caused by Hurricane Lidia.
