Puerto Vallarta Tourism Shattered Records in 2023

Puerto Vallarta set unprecedented records in key tourism metrics in 2023, according to data from the Tourist Information System of the State of Jalisco. The city welcomed a record-breaking 6.04 million visitors in 2023, marking a 2.2% increase from the previous year and surpassing the rebound seen in 2022 after the pandemic, where 5.91 million tourists visited.

Economically, Puerto Vallarta also experienced significant growth, with revenues reaching $41,322 million pesos in 2023 – a 2.3% increase from the $40,400 million pesos recorded in 2022.

The means of arrival for tourists also saw noteworthy developments. In 2023, a total of 6.04 million visitors arrived in Puerto Vallarta via air, sea, and land, representing a remarkable 10.1% growth compared to the previous year. Cruise ship arrivals demonstrated the fastest growth, surging by 15.69% to 543,609 passengers.

Maintaining a steady pace, hotel occupancy rates in 2023 remained consistent with the previous year, despite an increase in the supply of hotel rooms due to new constructions and expansions. The diverse accommodation options, including digital platforms and alternative choices, contributed to the city’s ability to meet the demands of a broad spectrum of tourists.

An encouraging aspect of Puerto Vallarta’s tourism success story is the positive impact on employment. In 2023, formal job opportunities in the city exceeded 148 thousand, marking a substantial 6.5% increase from the nearly 139 thousand recorded in 2022. This demonstrates the city’s ability to create and sustain employment, fostering economic prosperity.

Luis Villaseñor, the director of the Trust of Tourism of the city, attributes this exceptional achievement to the unique attributes of Puerto Vallarta, stating, “In Puerto Vallarta, we have attributes that make us unique, such as the combination of mountains, sea, and town with a cosmopolitan vibe. Our city serves and satisfies everyone’s tastes and budgets thanks to its multi-segment offer in hospitality and experiences, which led us to be a multi-award-winning destination in 2023.”

These extraordinary results are credited to a concerted effort by the state and municipal government in promoting Puerto Vallarta at national and international levels, as well as the collaborative spirit of the local community. The hospitality industry, with its commitment to exceptional accommodation, and all other service providers play a crucial role in ensuring that Puerto Vallarta remains the premier tourist destination in Mexico.
