Puerto Vallarta to Join National Earthquake Drill on April 29

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – On Tuesday, April 29, at 11:30 a.m., Puerto Vallarta will take part in Mexico’s First National Drill of 2025, an exercise designed to strengthen civil protection efforts across the country.

In Puerto Vallarta, the seismic alert will sound through state loudspeakers to simulate an 8.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter off the coast of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. The drill will test how well authorities, businesses, schools, and residents can respond to a major emergency.

Because of Puerto Vallarta’s coastal location and strong tourism industry, specific earthquake and tsunami protocols will be activated, with support from the Ministry of the Navy. Civil Protection will oversee operations at key sites including the Malecón, beaches, hotels, and schools.

Residents are encouraged to participate by practicing calm responses, identifying evacuation routes, and reviewing safety procedures. Drills like this one help prepare people for emergencies by highlighting risks, evaluating response times, and improving evacuation plans.

In Jalisco, including Puerto Vallarta, the alert will be broadcast through loudspeakers and local radio and television stations. Cell phone alerts will only be active in Mexico City and its metropolitan area.

National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velázquez Alzúa emphasized the need for effective and organized action during the exercise. Participating in drills is crucial for strengthening coordination between authorities, rescue teams, and the community.

Regular exercises raise public awareness, reduce panic in real emergencies, and increase the likelihood of saving lives and protecting property.
