Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As part of the Noches de Verano en OPC (Summer Nights at OPC) program at the Office of Cultural Projects (OPC) in Puerto Vallarta, acclaimed author Cristina Rivera Garza will make her debut visit to the city to share insights into her literary work.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, born in Tamaulipas but based in the United States, embarked on a meticulous journey through personal and institutional archives to illuminate the tragic femicide of her sister, Liliana.
In a poignant testament to resilience, Rivera Garza transformed her arduous search for justice into the acclaimed memoir, El Invencible Verano de Liliana (The Invincible Summer of Liliana). Published three years ago, this groundbreaking work has garnered a multitude of awards, culminating in the Pulitzer Prize, a historic first for a Mexican author in the memoir category.
Through a meticulous reconstruction of her sister’s life, employing letters, legal documents, and personal recollections, Rivera Garza paints a vivid portrait of Liliana’s existence, tragically cut short by an act of violence. Her work also underscores the ongoing issue of femicide and the lack of justice that persists.
On Thursday, August 1st, at 6:30 pm, Rivera Garza will engage in a captivating dialogue with fellow writer Saúl Hernández Vargas at the Office of Cultural Projects (OPC). Their conversation, titled Un Archivo Alterno: Correcciones Históricas a Partir de la Ficción (“An Alternate Archive: Historical Corrections from Fiction”), delves into the intricate interplay between fiction and historical truth, examining how literature can reshape our understanding of history and challenge conventional narratives.
Poetry and OPC deputy director Sayuri Sánchez will moderate the panel discussion, which promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition.
To enhance the evening’s ambiance, refreshing summer cocktails will be served, thanks to the OPC’s sponsors, Atarraya Raicilla, Eterno Embrujo Raicilla and 1800 Tequila. Everyone is invited to this unforgettable event and experience the transformative power of literature. Admission is free.
