Things MiMi Believes But Has Never Fact-checked

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Everyone grows up hearing bits of advice, old wives’ tales, and familiar expressions that somehow become accepted as fact. Rarely does anyone stop to ask where they originated or whether they’re actually true. In this lighthearted collection, MiMi Bomba reflects on some of the sayings she’s believed for years, examining each one with a healthy dose of humor, common sense, and just enough skepticism to keep things interesting.

  • Carrots are good for you eyes. I am pretty sure this one is true. I don’t know the science, but I have never seen a bunny rabbit wearing glasses.
  • If your palm itches, you’re about to receive money. So if you’re standing at an ATM and your palm starts itching, this one seems to work out.
  • If your nose itches, someone is talking about you. Maybe they want to tell you that you have something on your nose, and that’s why it itches.
  • The best way to avoid waking up with a hangover has two possible solutions. One: Don’t drink. Two: Don’t wake up. I like the second option.
  • What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. Who thought of this one? I’m pretty sure that if I get hit by a bus it will not turn me into a superhero with super-human strength. However, what doesn’t kill me might make me more careful.
  • God didn’t make any trash. En serio? I beg to differ on this one. Check out the current regime in la Casa Blanca…
  • A watched pot never boils. Yes, it does. But it’s boring AF!
  • Dogs that bark don’t bite. If you believe this one, you deserve to get bitten.
  • Women are like fine wine. They get better with age. I would love to believe this. However, I have too much respect for Tempranillo, Malbec and Pinot Noir.
  • Youth is wasted on the young. Much like, If I only knew then what I know now.
  • “I am not sleeping. I am just resting my eyes.” (And avoiding waking up with a hangover.)
