Little-known Facts about Handel’s Messiah:

  • Originally intended for Lent, Messiah was moved to Christmas during the Victorian era.
  • Composed for a small ensemble, Victorian performances featured thousands of musicians and hundreds of singers.
  • Handel completed the three-hour work in just 18 days in 1741 (OSV will perform selected excerpts).
  • Handel shed tears while composing the Hallelujah Chorus.
  • Throughout his life, Handel refused payment for Messiah performances, believing he didn’t deserve it.
