Volunteers Tackle Canal Cleanup in the Santa María Neighborhood

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Last weekend, Puerto Vallarta took another step toward environmental preservation with a large-scale cleanup and dredging operation targeting the Santa María neighborhood canal, an initiative spearheaded by council members Laurel Carrillo and Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal, president of the Building Commission for Free, Clean and Certified Beaches.

This project, which also extended to the Luis Donaldo Colosio bypass, drew the participation of approximately 300 volunteers, revealing a strong sense of civic duty. Councilors Víctor Bernal, Felipe Aréchiga, and Erika Rubio, along with department heads like Javier Navarro from Servicios Eficientes, joined the efforts, reinforcing the city’s commitment to cleaner public spaces.

The day began early, with participants dividing into four groups to tackle the two locations, and included councilors, department directors, and members of the Red Rehabilita youth organization.

Consequently, the teams successfully removed roughly four tons of waste, a stark testament to the extent of the pollution. Beyond the sheer volume of trash, which included discarded furniture, tires, food waste, and even toilet bowls, a more alarming discovery surfaced.

In particular, the presence of giant rat infestations raised significant public health concerns, highlighting the direct link between improper organic waste disposal and the proliferation of disease-carrying pests.

Councilman Bravo Carbajal urged residents and business owners to avoid dumping trash into canals. “Our municipal president, Luis Munguía, has given clear instructions to rescue and restore our beaches, rivers, and canals. We need everyone’s cooperation in following garbage collection schedules and proper waste disposal to prevent pollution from reaching our seas,” he emphasized.

This initiative highlights Puerto Vallarta’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, demonstrating that through community effort, significant progress can be made in keeping the city clean and beautiful.
