Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – As families across Puerto Vallarta prepare for the upcoming school year, the Vallarta Abuelos have launched their seventh annual School Bag Project, a community-driven effort that helps children from low-income households start school with the supplies they need to succeed.
The 2026 campaign officially began on June 1 and aims to provide backpacks filled with essential school supplies to hundreds of local children. For a donation of just 600 pesos, or approximately $35 USD, you can sponsor a backpack that will help a child begin the school year ready to learn.
This year, the organization hopes to assist more than 700 children, many of whom are being raised by single mothers or grandmothers. These families often work long hours cleaning homes and hotel rooms, preparing food in small restaurants and taco stands, or performing other essential jobs that help keep Puerto Vallarta running.

For households earning between 3,000 and 4,000 pesos per week, the cost of education can place a significant strain on already tight budgets. While public education is available in Mexico, families are still responsible for school fees, uniforms, specialized shoes, transportation, lunches, and classroom supplies. These expenses can add up quickly, creating barriers that contribute to student absenteeism and school dropout rates.
The School Bag Project was created to ease that burden and encourage children to continue their education. Each backpack is filled with notebooks, pencils, pens, and other supplies needed for the academic year, providing students with both practical tools and renewed confidence as they enter the classroom.
The impact of the program is evident. Thanks to community support, Vallarta Abuelos distributed 600 backpacks last year, bringing relief to families and excitement to children eager to return to school. Organizers hope to build on that success in 2026 and reach even more students in need.
One of the most appealing aspects of the project is its transparency. The School Bag Project operates under the auspices of DFW International, a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. As a result, donations made by U.S. taxpayers may qualify for a tax deduction. More importantly, organizers emphasize that 100% of donations go directly toward purchasing backpacks and school supplies. The program has no paid staff and no administrative fees.
Community members who wish to help can sponsor one backpack or several. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps provide a child with the resources needed to continue their education and pursue future opportunities.
Donations can be made online through the School Bags 2026 GoFundMe campaign, and supporters are encouraged to decline the optional platform tip so that more funds go directly toward helping local children.
As the new school year approaches, the Vallarta Abuelos are once again inviting residents, visitors, and friends of Puerto Vallarta to invest in the future of local children. With each backpack provided, another student gains the tools, confidence, and encouragement needed to stay in school and work toward a brighter future.
