Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – On October 19, 2025, Puerto Vallarta will host the Second International Trash Fishing Tournament, an event that combines teamwork, environmental action, and community spirit.
Organized by Limpia tu Mar Puerto Vallarta A.C., this innovative competition is designed to reduce marine pollution while raising awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans. With millions of tons of plastic entering the seas annually, the tournament is a powerful reminder that collective action can help turn the tide.
The event, which will take place at Los Muertos Pier, seeks to remove floating debris that threatens Banderas Bay’s diverse marine life. The tournament also aims to increase collective awareness about the impact of pollution and inspire people to take an active role in protecting natural resources.
Last year’s inaugural tournament was a major success, with participants collecting an impressive 2.3 tons of waste. The haul included everything from bottles and cans to larger items like tires and even the remains of refrigerators. All collected waste was properly sorted by municipal authorities for recycling and disposal.
This year’s competition will run from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and will feature categories for different types of waste, including PET, non-recyclable plastic, glass, aluminum, Styrofoam, and bulky waste. In addition to prizes for the most collected waste, a special award will be given to the most creative team.
Participation is open to everyone, including local and international citizens, educational institutions, civil associations, and companies. Teams can have up to five members, with one child (age 8 or older) allowed per team if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Each team will also be assigned a leader from Limpia tu Mar.
Registration costs 5,000 pesos per team, a donation that supports Limpia tu Mar’s year-round marine cleanup brigades. Registration includes the boat, two trash-catching nets, five pairs of protective gloves, trash bags, and five official tournament T-shirts. Space is limited to 40 teams, with registration open until September 30, 2025.
