Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – If you’d like to know more about the spirit known as “the grandfather of tequila,” you won’t want to miss the Seventh Annual Dama Juana Raicilla Festival, set to be held March 16-17 from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm in front of the Vallarta Institute of Culture on the Rio Cuale Island. This free, two-day event celebrates Raicilla, a distilled agave spirit produced in Jalisco with a growing fanbase.
Similar to tequila and mezcal, Raicilla comes in two distinct varieties based on regional agave species and production methods. “La Raicilla de la Costa” utilizes Angustifolia Haw and Rhodacantha agaves found along the Mexican west coast, while “La Raicilla de la Sierra” leverages Maximiliana Baker, Inaequidens Koch, and Valenciana agaves cultivated in nearby mountains.
The festival offers Raicilla tastings, mixology demonstrations, live music performances, and food vendors. Entertainment includes traditional Mexican folk dance by Ballet Xiutla and Ballet Tradiciones, alongside musical acts like Mariachi Los Polvitos and Banda Perla Negra.
