Puerto Vallarta Champions Charrería with New School Launch

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta is set to elevate its charrería tradition, a cornerstone of Mexican heritage, as Mayor Luis Munguía announced plans to establish the best Charrería School in Jalisco. This initiative aims to preserve and promote the centuries-old sport, blending horsemanship, music, and cultural artistry.

Speaking at a Municipal Sports Council (COMUDE) press conference, Mayor Munguía emphasized his administration’s commitment to reviving charrería, noting that previous governments had neglected the sport. “We’re ready to work hand in hand to give it the real push it deserves,” he stated. Backed by local councilors and the Mexican Charrería Federation, the project is designed to engage the community and nurture young talent.

The Charrería School, set to open on December 15 at the Miguel “Prieto” Ibarría charro arena, will welcome students aged 8 to 18. Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, offering expert instruction at a monthly fee of 600 pesos per student. The school will accommodate 60 participants, providing a space to learn traditional skills such as cattle roping, horseback stunts, and other techniques central to charrería.

Salvador Barajas del Toro, president of the Mexican Charrería Federation, joined councilor Erika Yesenia García Rubio and other key officials in endorsing the initiative. Andrés Ramírez Meza, the school’s instructor, highlighted the significance of preserving the unique etiquette, artistry, and pageantry of charro culture, which differs from its rodeo counterpart in the U.S.

Charrería, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, represents a living testament to Mexican values and customs. Puerto Vallarta’s renewed focus on this sport aims to inspire future generations while enhancing its appeal as a cultural and tourist destination.
