Major Road Improvements to Alleviate Traffic in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Puerto Vallarta and Jalisco State governments have joined forces to significantly improve traffic flow on two of the city’s most heavily traveled thoroughfares: Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue and Mexico Avenue.

A key component of this initiative is the construction of a new overpass at the Las Juntas intersection, a notorious bottleneck for both local residents and tourists. This 373-million-peso project, funded by the State of Jalisco, will create a second elevated level, facilitating faster travel between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas and improving access to Nayarit.

Furthermore, the Las Juntas intersection itself will undergo a complete overhaul. This includes the elimination of the existing traffic light and crosswalk, replaced by a dedicated pedestrian bridge to enhance traffic flow. The intersection will also feature improved shoulders and return lanes.

These improvements are part of a larger plan to address the city’s growing traffic congestion. Other key elements include:

  • Reconstruction of Francisco Murguía Street: This will improve connectivity with State Highway 544 and provide better access to the Las Palmas area.
  • Widening of Francisco Medina Ascencio: The avenue will be expanded to four lanes between Ixtapa and Palma Real Street, enhancing traffic flow in this crucial corridor.
  • Construction of an overpass at the motorway junction: This will allow vehicles to easily change lanes and access the airport.
  • Construction of the Amado Nervo (Federación) Bridge: This bridge will serve as an alternate route between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas, with the federal, state, and municipal governments each contributing to its development.

Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro emphasized that these projects are a direct response to the concerns of local residents and the needs of a growing tourism sector. By implementing these comprehensive solutions, the government aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors to Puerto Vallarta.
