Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – With the rainy and hurricane season fast approaching, Puerto Vallarta officials are stepping up efforts to ensure the safety of residents. Supported by Mayor Luis Munguía, authorities at the municipal, state, and federal levels have begun inspecting temporary shelters across the city.
The first inspections focused on two of the 13 designated shelters: a classroom at CTM Fovissste 96, which can host up to 135 people, and Margarita Lepe Jasso Secondary School Number 29, with room for 195. In total, the city has prepared shelter space for 2,533 people should an emergency occur.
The evaluations were carried out with support from the Mexican Navy, the Comprehensive Port Authority, the Eighth Sanitary Region, the Jalisco State Civil Protection Agency, and Puerto Vallarta’s DIF System.
The 2025 Pacific hurricane season officially begins on May 15 and runs through November 30, with forecasts suggesting it may be more active than usual. Misael López Muro, Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, confirmed the municipality is ready for any weather-related emergencies. He also announced that the Municipal Civil Protection Council will remain in permanent session to coordinate response efforts throughout the season.
He also urged citizens to stay informed solely through official channels to avoid misinformation regarding the “Alvin phenomenon,” the first anticipated tropical cyclone of the 2025 Pacific hurricane season, which some say will hit on May 15. While no precise formation date is available, Alvin is projected to develop in the Northeast Pacific Ocean between late May and early June and holds the potential to intensify into a hurricane – depending on weather developments.
While it’s anyone’s guess when the season’s first hurricane will emerge, these preventive measures reflect the ongoing dedication of the current administration to safeguard Vallarta families and ensure the city is prepared for any challenges the season may bring.
