Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Public bus fares in all of Jalisco, including Puerto Vallarta, will see a technical adjustment in 2026, but most riders will continue to pay a subsidized rate thanks to a new state support program announced by State authorities.
Following approval by the Technical Fare Committee, the official technical fare for public transportation across Jalisco will rise from 10 to 14 pesos starting in 2026. This is the first adjustment since 2018 and was calculated under a multi-year indexing model that will keep the rate fixed through 2030.
To prevent the full increase from affecting users, Governor Pablo Lemus unveiled a 1.2 billion peso financial support strategy aimed directly at passengers. Under the new model, the state will subsidize 3 pesos per trip through the “Al Estilo Jalisco” Unique Card, allowing the general public to continue paying 11 pesos per ride.
Mexican citizens with a voter ID who use the card will qualify for the subsidized fare, while those without it will pay the full technical rate of 14 pesos. Discount protections for vulnerable groups remain unchanged. Students, seniors, teachers, and people with disabilities will continue to receive a 50 percent discount, paying just 7 pesos per trip.
The application process for the new card is scheduled to begin in January 2026, with a target of distributing 1.5 million cards by April. While full details have not yet been released, state officials indicated that additional information will be shared in the coming weeks.
Governor Lemus emphasized that the technical increase reflects rising fuel and supply costs but stressed that affordability remains the priority. He explained that government support will now go directly to the people of Jalisco rather than transportation operators, ensuring broader and more transparent benefits.
He also assured residents that the adjustment is designed to be long-term and stable, noting that it is the first increase in seven years and will be the only one during his administration, with no further fare hikes planned before 2030.
The fare update is paired with continued investment in improving service quality in Puerto Vallarta. Recently, 31 new 2026-model buses were added to the local fleet in a 150 million peso investment. The expansion includes 10 electric buses, 15 natural gas units, and 6 diesel buses.
All public transportation units are equipped with air conditioning, video surveillance, and electronic payment systems. Looking ahead, officials also confirmed plans to consolidate an electromobility corridor along Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue later in 2026, reinforcing the city’s shift toward cleaner and more efficient public transit.
