Puerto Vallarta Plans Ambitious El Salado Stadium Project

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México – A significant infrastructure proposal for Puerto Vallarta has come to light following the leak of technical and financial documents detailing the Estadio Metropolitano El Salado (“El Salado Metropolitan Stadium”).

Jointly promoted by the Government of Jalisco and the Municipal Government of Puerto Vallarta, the project aims to establish a multipurpose complex on land adjacent to the International Convention Center. With a planned capacity of 15,000 spectators, the venue is designed to host high-impact sporting events and international shows, positioning the city as a major competitor in the global tourism and events market.

The total investment for the ambitious development is estimated at 1,348,631,515 pesos. This figure covers more than just sports infrastructure; it includes a full-scale hotel, corporate suites, a premier club, and various commercial concessions. To fund this massive undertaking, the proposal outlines a mixed financing model.

Public resources are expected to cover 60% of the costs – split between federal (25%), state (20%), and municipal (15%) contributions – while the remaining 40% would be sourced from private investors through naming rights and commercial partnerships.

Economic breakdown of the costs reveals that 380 million pesos are dedicated specifically to the hotel component. This facility is slated to feature 246 rooms, alongside restaurants, bars, and a “speakeasy” concept. The rest of the budget is allocated to essential stadium infrastructure, including advanced security systems, a modern roof design, parking facilities, and pedestrian bridges to ensure spectator safety and accessibility.

Beyond the physical construction, the project is framed as a major engine for regional employment. Projections suggest the stadium’s operation could create up to 500 direct and 1,700 indirect jobs. The integrated hotel would add another 390-500 direct positions and up to 1,500 indirect roles.

The project also considers long-term economic benefits, by positioning Puerto Vallarta as a venue for major sporting events and shows, which would attract tourism, improve urban infrastructure and strengthen the local economy through the economic benefits derived from visitors, suppliers, tourist services, auxiliary industry and logistics.

Despite the level of detail in the conceptual proposal, there is significant uncertainty regarding the actual execution of the project. Authorities have not announced a construction start date, nor confirmed that full funding commitments and required environmental and technical permits have been secured, leaving the ultimate future of the El Salado Metropolitan Stadium in question.
