Vallarta Marathon 2026 Details Presented; Road Closures Announced

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Organizers of the 7th edition of the Puerto Vallarta Marathon have finalized preparations for race day on Sunday, April 19, with more than 3,000 runners expected to take part and temporary road closures planned to ensure a safe and successful event.

The race will begin and end at the Malecón Arches, with the marathon and half-marathon starting at 5:30 a.m., followed by the 10K and 5K races at 5:45 a.m. Participants from 24 countries are scheduled to compete, highlighting the event’s growing international appeal.

During a recent press conference, race director Humberto Muñoz outlined the logistics for the event, including the temporary road closures that will begin at 2:00 a.m. Sunday. The primary closure will affect Avenida México, from the area near the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center toward the Malecón.

Officials recommend drivers use alternate routes such as Calle Perú and the Luis Donaldo Colosio Bypass to avoid delays.

The marathon route will extend from the city center along the central lanes of Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio to the La Corona intersection. It will also include stretches along Avenida Fluvial Vallarta and Avenida Rodríguez Barba, requiring drivers to remain alert to changing traffic patterns throughout the morning.

Closures will be temporary and lifted gradually as runners pass through each section. Some areas, including Fluvial Vallarta and the airport zone, are expected to begin reopening around 9:00 a.m., with full traffic restoration anticipated by midday.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their travel ahead of time, especially during peak hours along routes leading to Bahía de Banderas and the Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Allowing extra travel time is strongly recommended.

The Municipal Government of Puerto Vallarta, led by Mayor Luis Munguía, is supporting the event through coordinated efforts by Traffic and Road Safety, Civil Protection, and Public Safety teams. Officials estimate the marathon will generate an economic impact of approx 30 million pesos.

City leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting events that encourage healthy lifestyles while strengthening tourism and showcasing Puerto Vallarta as a premier destination for international sporting events.
