Puerto Vallarta has officially launched its 2026 Breeding Site Elimination Operation, signaling a proactive start to the city’s annual public health initiative. The campaign kicked off at the Agustín Flores Contreras Stadium through a joint effort between the Municipal Government and Health Region VIII of the Jalisco Health Services.
By starting these efforts now, officials aim to establish a strong defense against dengue before the arrival of the summer rainy season, when the Aedes aegypti mosquito is most active.
This specific mosquito species is known to thrive in stagnant, clean water, making residential areas a primary focus for prevention. While dengue can cause symptoms such as high fever, headaches, and muscle pain, the community has the power to significantly reduce these risks through simple environmental management.
Councilwoman María Laurel Carrillo Ventura, representing Mayor Luis Munguía, noted that the success of the initiative depends on the active participation of residents working together to protect their families and neighborhoods. By maintaining clean yards and ensuring that water tanks remain tightly sealed, homeowners can eliminate the environments where mosquitoes typically lay their eggs.
Dr. Miguel Ángel Suárez, Director of Health Promotion for the municipality, recognized the dedication of health promotion brigades that will carry out the operation. Meanwhile, Dr. Luis Manuel Michel reported that the campaign includes door-to-door visits to conduct larval control in homes across the city.
Authorities are urging residents to support the effort by taking four simple actions: wash, cover, turn over, and discard any containers that might collect rainwater. Combined with personal precautions like wearing protective clothing and using repellent, these small, routine actions serve as the most effective tools for protecting the community.
Officials concluded the launch event by encouraging residents to cooperate with visiting health brigades and remain proactive in their homes. The campaign reflects the city’s continued commitment to public health and its determination to protect the community.
