Puerto Vallarta Navy Day River Cleanup Set for May 31

Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors are invited to roll up their sleeves and help protect the region’s natural beauty during a community river cleanup on May 31. Organized by Limpia tu Mar Puerto Vallarta and Unidos Por Mismaloya, the event will focus on cleaning the Mismaloya and Pitillal rivers as part of the city’s National Navy Day celebrations.

The cleanup begins at 8:00 am, with volunteers gathering at two meeting points: Mismaloya Beach and in front of UNIRSE at the entrance to Paseo de la Ribera. Participants are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, a hat or cap, and plenty of enthusiasm to help make a difference.

Organizers say every bottle, plastic bag, and piece of trash removed from the rivers helps prevent pollution from reaching the ocean. Since debris carried by rivers often ends up along Puerto Vallarta’s coastline, keeping riverbanks clean is considered just as important as maintaining the beaches themselves.

The effort also supports local wildlife by reducing dangers to fish, birds, marine animals, and plant life. Beyond the environmental benefits, organizers hope the event inspires others to take pride in the community and work together to keep public spaces clean and healthy.

The cleanup is designed to be family-friendly and welcoming to volunteers of all ages. In addition to helping the environment, the event offers an opportunity for neighbors and friends to connect while contributing to a shared cause.

Keeping Puerto Vallarta’s rivers and beaches free of trash also supports tourism and improves quality of life for both residents and visitors. Organizers emphasize that environmental care is a responsibility shared by everyone who enjoys the area’s natural surroundings.

The river cleanup is one of several activities planned in Puerto Vallarta to commemorate National Navy Day on June 1. The celebration will also include a maritime parade featuring approximately 80 boats traveling from Puerto Mágico to Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Schools from across the city are expected to participate in the festivities, and an official ceremony honoring fallen sailors will take place near the Malecón arches. The event will include the singing of the Mexican National Anthem by a student orchestra, followed by a public concert.

The goal is to expand the celebration beyond the military community by involving all sectors connected to maritime life, including fishermen, tourism operators, and local residents.
