Puerto Vallarta Water Intake Project Gains Business Support

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Business and government leaders in Puerto Vallarta are joining forces to advance a major water infrastructure project designed to strengthen the city’s drinking water supply for decades to come.

During a recent working meeting, SEAPAL Vallarta General Director Carlos Ruiz presented details of the Water Intake Project, an initiative aimed at increasing the municipality’s water capacity in response to continued population growth and major development projects across the region.

The proposal received strong support from members of the local business community, including Abel Villa, Daniel Torres, and Marcelo Álcaraz, along with Jalisco Undersecretary of Tourism Miguel Andrés Hernández Arteaga.

Attendees agreed that moving the project forward is an urgent priority and emphasized the importance of securing support and investment from the Government of Jalisco. They noted that the project is essential to sustaining the infrastructure expansion currently underway in Puerto Vallarta, including Terminal 2 at Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, the Amado Nervo Bridge, the Civil Hospital of the Coast, and the city’s continued growth.

The intake structure forms part of a larger hydraulic infrastructure plan with an estimated investment of 900 million pesos. The project includes construction of a diversion intake at the meeting point of the Mascota and Ameca rivers and would be developed by the Jalisco state government led by Governor Pablo Lemus.

According to SEAPAL Vallarta’s technical proposal, the first phase would involve joint investment by the state government and the utility agency to add 300 liters of water per second to the municipal system. That increase is expected to satisfy projected demand through 2032.

Once all three stages are completed, the system could deliver up to 1,000 additional liters per second, creating a long-term solution designed to secure Puerto Vallarta’s drinking water supply for the next 50 years while supporting the city’s economic and tourism development.
