Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Opening at PV’s Boutique Theatre on January 31, Mark Zeller and Rafa Zermano join together for illuminating evenings of soul searching songs by Canadian singer songwriter, Leonard Cohen.
Recognized as an international icon for his novels, poems and provocative lyrics, Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Life Achievement award, plus multiple recognitions from Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe. Called the “Salvador Dali of songwriting,” Cohen’s lyrics probe the political, sexual and spiritual mysteries of being alive.
Synching Zeller’s prolific theatrical profile and passionate stage presence with Zermano’s virtuosity on the guitar, the program packs a powerful punch while honoring the authenticity of Leonard Cohen’s work. Multi-talented Dana Zeller-Alexis, produces and directs the Tribute.
Mark Zeller’s impressive career includes leads in Broadway plays and musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, about which The New York Times wrote: “Unintimidated by shadows or echoes of Tevya’s past, Mr. Zeller gets his comic effects with a mischievous glint without overreaching.”
Zeller was the original Training Director of San Francisco’s American Conservatory of Theatre, a Shakespearean voice coach, faculty member of NY Univ. School of Arts, and founder of 78th Street Theatre Lab, NYC. A favorite on PV stages, one reviewer wrote, “If you get the chance to see a show with Zeller, run, don’t walk, to get tickets.” And a critic for NYC Village Voice wrote: “Zeller’s acting and singing mesh elegantly with his witty tone.”
“Cohen’s lyrics are invitingly complex,” says Zeller. “After fourteen years working in Puerto Vallarta, I was eager to work with a Mexican musician. Rafa Zermano has been praised as one of the most gifted jazz guitarists in Mexico City. Finding him was a stroke of luck. We work moment-to-moment sensing the nuances of discovery in every show.”
