Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Act2PV has rolled out a whole new style of entertainment. On Wednesday nights at 9:00 they present “The Greatest Show on Earth,” a FREE performance that gives you a sneak peek at some of the great shows playing at the ONLY outdoor theater in Puerto Vallarta.
Local entertainment writer Gary R. Beck, who attended last week’s show in Act2PV’s new Starlight Cabaret, tells us more about this not-to-be-missed evening:
Attendees are in store for a different show every Wednesday at 9:00 pm, as Act2PV performers take turns performing in “The Greatest Show on Earth,” resulting in a great snapshot of the various singers and dancers and the shows they star in that helps theater-goers decide which shows are of interest.
Listed below are the singers who participated in last week’s extravaganza and a sample of the shows in which they star. Staged so beautifully by Alfonso López, this weekly event is a necessity for theater-goers to experience these accomplished artists whom we are fortunate to have in our community.
Marc Lopez [“Crooners” and “Best of Broadway”] was the master of ceremony, exuding the manner of his love of the Las Vegas clubs. He was joined by three lovely ladies, each of which is gifted with fantastic vocals, style and range. Faride Talamas [“Hello Barbra, Hello Bette” and “Reflections”], Daniela Treviño [“Reflections” and “Best of Broadway”] and Brenda Gaviño [“Linda Ronstadt: In My Voice” and “Reflections”] are the three women who tonight honored the stage with their talents.
Brenda scored with a Motown hit “Heat Wave” which Linda Ronstadt covered. She displays a sweet smiling personality as she jumps through the song “burning in my heart.” “Funny Girl” Faride not only marked this song as a standard but cemented Barbra Streisand in musical history with “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. She possesses this composition and no one particularly desired to rain on anything she sang. Her powerful vocals are at the forefront especially in the high-reaching finale. She almost ‘brought the house down!’ Then she switched over to Bette Midler, who strutted herself in “Stuff Like That There” from “For The Boys”
There appeared the crooner from Las Vegas. Marc would be a smash hit if he ever performed in one of their venues. He swung back and forth to “Mack the Knife” bringing back memories for some people of Bobby Darin. He projects a gracious and welcoming stage presence.
Next was “Seasons of Love” from “Rent”, on its path to becoming a classic tune. Their harmonies are so distinctly remarkable. “Phantom of the Opera” took everyone on a emotional musical sojourn with “All I Ask of You”, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. This is truly The Best of Broadway show music. From 1981’s “Cats”, another song was performed “Memories”, again with full professional vocalizations.
Stephen Retchless showed his face and started shaking the dance floor with “Evil”. He is not only a singer but a dancer specializing in world-championship pole dancing for which he has won numerous awards. He taps his way to sensational pleasure and is seen here on Tuesday nights in “Limitless”.
“La Cigarra” [The Cicada] was a highlight of Brenda Gaviño’s exploring Latin songs which Ronstadt sang and included in her releases in honor of her family in Mexico and Arizona. Her notes soared higher and higher. She is also a gifted pianist and accompanied Daniela’s vocals. The pair are a duo hatched in Heaven. Their vocals melded in distinct harmony.
The show continued with “Why don’t You Do Right” [like some other men do, give me some money, too.] Then, the foursome stood hand in hand in front of an appreciative crowd that was calling for more and that they will receive when they return for another visit.
